The role of Fine Arts has never been more important in a student's overall school experience than it is today. With global communication and worldwide competition for jobs, the defining edge
will go to those with the skills only the Fine Arts can foster. As Dan Pink says in his award-winning book, A Whole New Mind, "The era of “left brain” dominance, and the Information Age that it engendered, are giving way to a new world in which “right brain” qualities-inventiveness, empathy, and meaning-predominate."
Through the study and practice of Fine Arts, today’s student will develop intrinsic motivation to engineer solutions to many creative challenges. This motivation learned from the search for inventive solutions to artistic challenges will carry over into many other fields of study, leading to a higher level of success than from the study of that subject alone. The success achieved by developing a solution will lead to increased levels of confidence.
The study of Fine Arts will provide students with the opportunity to explore artists and artworks in order to develop a sense of empathy, which will enable them to relate to people in all walks of life. A sense of empathy will not only help our students to become more successful, it will lead them to become better members of society. The ability to empathize with others leads to a more understanding environment, and helps
build a more productive atmosphere within the school. The ability to express meaning through Fine Arts is not only essential for uniquely communicating how you view the world, it helps you relate to others on a more personal level. A school where students have access to an outlet where they can express themselves in a meaningful way, and explore their feelings to discover that others feel the same way, can produce students who are more comfortable with themselves, more confident, and better prepared for life when they graduate.
There are other roles the Fine Arts play in the lives of many students. For some it’s an escape from the pressures of home and peers. It’s a place for students to shine among their more athletic classmates. For some it’s a unique experience that gets them out of bed in the morning and in to school.
I believe the Fine Arts are important in students’ lives to teach them so much more than just Art. When a student realizes that there is more than one solution to a problem, they learn to handle other obstacles in life. When students push through difficult projects, when what they thought would work fails, when they learn to adapt, change, take chances and then create something amazing, they have just taken the
first steps towards real world success.
